Ever since I got my very own Game Boy 15 years ago I’ve been a sucker for Nintendo consoles. I remember playing classics like Tetris, Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Super Mario Land 1-2 & several others on the small screen, which was capable of displaying a dashing amount of 4 shades of greenish grey. Having almost no idea about the concept of graphics, it was amazing to experience the SNES shortly after. Where the gameplay only improved we got a rainbow of colors to gasp and sigh upon in amazement. Certain game concepts like god-games (Act Raiser 1-2) and simulation games (Sim City, Pilot Wings) were now a possibility.

Somewhere along the way I crossed over to PC gaming for almost a decade, missing console releases like the N64 and the GameCube. They simply didn’t appeal anymore compared to what the PC could do. Only 2 years ago I got my hands on a cube to play the Zeldas I missed and some Mario Kart, and however fun they were the PC still held my preference.

I find myself now in my early 20s owning a freshly bought Wii, and I can only say that I’m impressed. The motion control lives up to what it claims to be, and it brings a new experience to gaming. Nintendo has always been revolutionary in technology really, if you think about their first console and the infamous gun to shoot ducks with. Or the Virtual Boy, which flopped commercially for several reasons but was still brilliant in it’s essence.

In this age there’s an emphasis on connecting with people. Be it through cellphones or Web 2.0, or playing videogames with multiple people. Where in the last decade graphics were revolutionized in the gaming industry, we are now in the process of evolving the way how we experience videogames. The multiplayer aspect of the Wii is maybe it’s most important marketing weapon along with it’s motion controls, you see it in every advertisement they make. I’ve had a few friends coming over to try out Wii Sports, and every time they had a sense of just having done a social workout. It’s a good excuse for having a friend over to chill out with while having plenty of room to talk about stuff inbetween.
